Together we question

Our Prep School

Our Prep school education is more than just preparing your child for their time at senior school. It is a time for challenge, excitement and fun. It is a period of discovery, where your child will determine who they want to be while they are cared for in a safe and secure environment. We are an independent co-educational day and boarding school for children aged 8-13. We’re located in 175 acres of stunning grounds within the South Downs National Park in Liphook, and welcome families from across Hampshire, West Sussex and Surrey.

Prep school is, of course, a time of assessment and exams. This cannot be avoided. However, our exceptional teachers will carefully manage this time. They will ensure your child doesn’t simply focus on this part of their educational journey. It’s important that we work together to ensure that their love of learning remains and their carefully nurtured flame is not extinguished.

The process of self-discovery that your child will go through will also lead them to important points such as senior school applications. Our highly-experienced Senior Leadership Team will guide you through this journey. A Highfield and Brookham education gifts you exceptional choice as we feed more than 30 of the top day and boarding senior schools in the country. This means we can help your child find the right school for them. We have made the progressive decision to move away from the full Common Entrance syllabus but remain with Common Entrance in the core subjects. This has allowed us to create a bespoke curriculum that focuses on the essential skills that we know senior schools and future employers are seeking in young adults. Our promise to you is that your child will leave Year 8 as an adaptable, resilient and independent young person ready for the world ahead.

An excellent and very broad educational experience, combined with first-class pastoral care, great facilities in a wonderfully inspiring location.

Lessons

Our Prep school timetable is a one-week timetable consisting of eight 45-minute lessons a day. To maximise your child’s learning time the timetable has been curated to ensure they move around our specialist facilities in a logical order meaning precious time is spent in lessons rather than moving from one to the next.

To help your child develop the ability to self-critique in a constructive manner they will attend a weekly study skills lesson. Your child will have the opportunity to carry out this new-found skill by reflecting and commenting on their end-of-term progress reports. We provide many real-life opportunities like this for your child to put all of their knowledge and skills into practice. This helps to consolidate their learning as well as give meaning and context to their education.

Our specialist subject teachers in drama, music, games, PE, modern foreign languages, design technology, art and digital literacy teach all Prep school children. Our specialist facilities provide the perfect learning environment for these subjects. In addition, in Year 5 and Year 6 your child will be taught by a subject specialist in science where lessons are conducted in one of our three science labs. They also have an additional new subject added to their timetable – Latin. Our highly-experienced key stage specialist teachers will provide the core teaching in English and maths. By Year 7 your child will be set in all subjects and taught by a subject specialist in all lessons, including wellbeing, geography and history. This ensures your child has experienced the senior school model of teaching before they reach Year 9.

To allow your child to have a focused conclusion to their learning, the day will end in the same way it began – with their form teacher. This is a crucial cog in our exceptional pastoral wheel. It allows the teacher who knows your child best to touch base with them to ensure the day delivered all it had promised. And it allows them to support your child if things didn’t quite go to plan.

There are 21 Saturdays in the academic year where children in Year 5 and above attend school, with Year 4 attending school on 17 Saturdays. Saturday mornings are filled with curriculum extension activities where children consolidate their learning and stretch their understanding. Saturday afternoons follow the traditional structure of sports fixtures which parents are warmly invited to watch every week.

Food

Growing children need wholesome food which is why we commit to having such a brilliant Catering Department. All of your child’s meals are seasonally planned, freshly prepared and cooked on site. Morning break is at 10am – the same time for all children in the school. To ensure your child is fuelled appropriately so they can fully engage with their morning lessons they will be served a carbohydrate-based snack. This will provide them with a slow release of energy to keep them focused until lunch.

Lunch break for our Prep school children is at 12.45pm. Lunch service is staggered to ensure the dining hall feels a welcoming place for your child to eat lunch with their friends. The time your child will be called for lunch rotates throughout the week, so sometimes they will eat first and then enjoy the fresh air and sometimes the other way around. Lunch is canteen style with a wide range of tasty and nutritious food on offer to cater for all tastes. There are always hot and cold options, with plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and salads. Our bespoke menus operate on a three-week rotation and there is always a vegetarian option for those who choose to go meat free. Our aim is to feed your child but also to educate them about healthy choices and responsible eating. For example, when sweet treats and puddings are available our aim is to use reduced sugar and healthy alternatives.

To give your child that energy boost they need to see them through to the end of the day they are offered a snack during afternoon break at 3.15pm. Our approach to food is to ensure that your child has the correct levels of energy to perform well inside and outside of the classroom throughout the day.

Drop off

The gates at our Prep school open at 8am ready for the children to spill into their classrooms for 8.20am. Every day starts with 20 minutes of precious form time with your child’s class teacher to ensure they are set for the busy day ahead.

Our boarders enjoy a nourishing breakfast in our dining hall before the school day and our day children are invited to join them from 7.30am if they wish. We know how busy mornings can be so this option is valued by many families. Your child will be spoilt for choice for breakfast. There is always a hot option such as eggs on toast as well as cereal, porridge, yoghurt, toast and fresh fruit to kickstart their day.

After school

The school day finishes at 4.40pm but the fun doesn’t stop there. There is a full programme of after-school clubs which we actively encourage all children to take advantage of. There are four categories of clubs: physical, skill development, academic and artistic. We recommend your child tries one club from each group to fully benefit from our broad range of extra-curricular activities. Some of our clubs are run by our teachers who are passionate about a certain hobby, subject or sports and are free of charge. We also invite external professionals to run clubs such as LAMDA, Gymnastics and Golf, which do incur costs.

We offer Homework Club every day free of charge, so if there isn’t a new club your child wants to try and you need care for them after school they can stay with us until 5.30pm.

At 5.30pm our boarders head off to evening prep before heading into the Dining Hall for their homecooked supper at 6.30pm. Day children are invited to join boarders and can be collected as late as 7pm if family circumstances require it.

What we’re up to…

Year 7 residential trip highlights, straight from the group chat… 💬 Somewhere between damp and soaked the whole time, our Year 7s still managed to make the most of every moment in Scotland! They climbed Arkle, jumped from kayaks, explored the coastline and learnt survival skills before putting them to use during their night on Survival Island. Add in muddy boots, second helpings of lasagne, plenty of laughter and one surprisingly impressive apple tart cooked outdoors, you’ve got a trip they wont forget any time soon! #IndependentSchool #ResidentialTrip #SurvivalSkills #Resilience #LifeSkills

✔️ Two summits conquered. ✔️ One night surviving on their own. ✔️ Plenty of Scottish rain. ✔️ A week to remember. Our Year 7s packed an incredible amount into one week in Scotland. They climbed Arkle, jumped from kayaks, spotted lobsters and starfish, learnt how to build shelters, light fires and forage before putting those skills into practice during a night on Survival Island. Throw in muddy boots, second helpings of lasagne, plenty of laughter and one surprisingly impressive apple tart cooked outdoors, and you’ve got a residential trip that won’t be forgotten any time soon!

We’re proud to share that Highfield and Brookham has been commended in the Independent Schools of the Year Awards 2026, in the Student Wellbeing category. One of the core values at our school is ‘Being You’ because we believe every child deserves to feel comfortable in who they are. That sense of belonging is behind everything we do, and this recognition is a reflection of the dedication of every member of our school community who brings that value to life each day: our staff, our pupils and our supportive families. Congratulations to all the other outstanding schools who have also been commended and shortlisted. It’s a privilege to be recognised alongside them.💙 🔗Read more:

What a fantastic way to end the week! 🎉 We’ve been commended in the Independent Schools of the Year Awards 2026 in the Student Wellbeing category. Thank you, @independentschoolparent. It is wonderful to see the care, support and wellbeing provision at the heart of our school acknowledged in this way. Trying again < getting it right first time Some of our favourite moments over our holiday clubs aren’t the ones where it goes perfectly, but the ones where it doesn’t… and they have another go anyway! We like to encourage our children and ask questions instead of giving them the answers (as tempting as it is!), so they can work things out for themselves. That’s independence in action 💚 #IndependentSchool #HolidayClub #MultiActivities #IndependentSkills #ResilienceBuilding

Independence starts with confidence. And children often have way more of it than we sometimes give them credit for. Young children are naturally resourceful and resilient. Leave them to it, and they’ll surprise you every time! Today, that looked like a tower of blocks falling down three times. And one very determined builder picking it back up, every single time, without any help. That’s independence in action – one of the key skills we nurture on our Mini Marvels Holiday Club for our nursery children. We still have spaces over the next few weeks – visit our website to book. ➡ https://highfieldandbrookham.co.uk/school-plus/holiday-activity-clubs/

🌿 Den building is serious business… especially when someone finds the perfect stick. One of the things we love most about our Multi Activities course is watching children become more independent. Rather than stepping in with the answer, we give them the time to explore their ideas and work things out together. Sometimes all it takes is a question, a bit of encouragement and the freedom to have a go. The rest is up to them! #IndependentSchool #OutdoorLearning #MultiActivities #HolidayCourse #BuildingIndependence

We were saddened to hear of the recent passing of Dame Penelope Keith. Penelope holds a special place in the history of Highfield and Brookham. She was a close friend and neighbour of former Cabinet minister Virginia Bottomley, whose daughter attended our school. Virginia officially opened Brookham in its early days before inviting Penelope to open the art studio. It was a fitting occasion for a school where creativity has always been valued. Before the art studio was built, pottery lessons were held in our founder’s double garage – a reminder of the humble beginnings from which our outstanding creative provision has grown. Today, art continues to be a cornerstone of life at Highfield and Brookham, inspiring pupils to develop their creativity and individuality. We are proud that Dame Penelope played a part in our history and remember her with gratitude and affection. Our thoughts are with her family and all who knew and admired her.

🏊 It’s been great having pupils from Hollycombe Primary in our pool this week. We’re always pleased to open our doors to local schools, helping children become more confident and independent in the water. Sharon, our amazing Head of Swimming, says it best: “Every child arrives with a different level of confidence, so we always adapt and change things to suit their needs. We want children to feel happy and safe in the water because that’s how they build the confidence to have a go. If something isn’t working, we’ll explain it differently or show them another way until they’re ready to do it themselves.’

It was wonderful to welcome families to our annual Prize Giving as we celebrated the year that’s been and recognised the incredible achievements of our pupils 👏 A HUGE thank you to @benedictallenexplorer for joining us as our guest speaker. We may not all be setting off into the rainforest, but his stories certainly inspired our children to embrace their own adventures ahead. The celebrations continued with musical medleys, a surprise performance from our teachers and the handover from our Year 8 to the new student leadership team – a lovely way end to the school year 💙 #IndependentSchool #Liphook #PrizeGiving #Achievements #TogetherWeGrow

Could this summer be the perfect time to help your child become more independent? ☀️ In our latest blog, Georgie Hunter, Head of Pre-Prep and EYFS, explores why the summer holidays don’t have to be about filling every moment. Instead, they can be an opportunity to step back, give children more responsibility and watch their confidence grow. Read more here ➡

We are delighted to share that our pupils have been awarded a record 29 scholarships to a wide range of leading senior schools. 👏 The scholarships recognise achievement across an impressive range of disciplines, including academic, art, music, drama, dance, design engineering, product design, performing arts and sport, reflecting the breadth of talent within this year’s cohort. Congratulations to all of our pupils on this fantastic achievement, and thank you to the staff who have supported them throughout their scholarship journeys. We wish them every success as they take their next steps. Read more and find out about this year’s record scholarship success. ➡

After an emotional farewell video (a true labour of love from Mr Backhouse!) it’s almost time to say goodbye to our Year 8s. Tomorrow we’ll celebrate all that they’ve achieved at Prize Giving, but today we’d simply like to thank them for being such a valued part of our school community. Wishing you every success and happiness in your exciting new journey ahead! ✨

The summer holidays are nearly here… ☀ From building dens and getting creative to scoring goals and learning new skills, there’s plenty to look forward to with our Holiday Activities this summer. Last night, our Year 8 pupils took to the stage for the final performance of Shrek. It wasn’t the smoothest journey to Far, Far Away. A heatwave that delayed rehearsals, alongside a few other unexpected surprises, couldn’t stop our cast from putting on a fantastic show. A huge thank you to everyone who worked behind the scenes to make this production such a success. Our musicians, tech, and makeup teams all played an important part in bringing the swamp to life. And to Mrs Baird, thank you for your unwavering belief in every pupil, for sharing your passion for theatre with us all, and for somehow finding the most spectacular Dragon to complete the cast! Well done, Year 8. We don’t think anyone will be forgetting this trip to the swamp anytime soon! 💚

Last night our Year 8s took to the stage for their final performance of Shrek… and what a show it was! It wasn’t exactly the smoothest journey to Far, Far Away. A heatwave delaying rehearsals, along with a few other unexpected surprises, couldn’t stop our cast from bringing the swamp to life. A huge thank you to everyone behind the scenes who brought the show to life – our musicians, tech and makeup teams. And of course to Mrs Baird.. thank you for believing in every pupil, for sharing your love of theatre with us all, AND for somehow finding the most spectacular dragon to complete the cast! What a way to end the year. Well done Year 8 – we’ll be smiling about this one for a long time 💚 #IndependentSchool #ShrekTheMusical #SchoolProduction #PerformingArts #ResilientAdaptability

What a few days away for our Year 4 residential! There were climbs that looked a little too high, zip wires that took a bit of courage, canoe battles that got everyone soaked, water slides that ended with lots of laughter and a very competitive game of wellie boot throwing! As we return to school, we’re bringing back more than muddy clothes and tired legs. We’re bringing back children who have discovered a little more confidence in themselves 💛

Swipe through a few of our favourite moments from Year 3’s adventure at Sayers Croft. 🌿 We spend a lot of time talking about resilience, but it isn’t built in the classroom alone. Sometimes, it looks like taking one more step up a huge rock. Sometimes, it’s facing your fears on a zipline. Sometimes, it’s working together as a team and not giving up until everyone succeeds. Well done, Year 3, for embracing every challenge and showing what resilience really looks like! #IndependentSchool #ResidentialTrip #Resilience #SelfBelief #Adaptability

If you heard Japanese echoing through Highfield last week… now you know why! Our pupils put on a brilliant showcase for their families, demonstrating everything they’ve been learning with Sensei Matt. One of the many skills Karate Club teaches us is resilience. Some moves can take a little longer to master, but learning to adapt and keep going builds the confidence to take on new challenges, both on and off the mat 💪🏽 #IndependentSchool #Liphook #KarateClub #ResilientAdaptability #ConfidenceBuilding

Our Airfix Model Club put their latest creations on display last week, giving everyone the chance to admire the impressive models they had been working on. Led by Mr Baker, the club has helped our children develop the focus and attention to detail that every great model builder needs. Of course, not every build goes to plan, and that’s all part of it! A piece doesn’t always fit and sometimes one mysteriously disappears altogether, which usually means a change of plan. But every model is a reminder that great results come from patience and perseverance. We even had a surprise guest judge! Our Estates Manager, Mr Edwards, who served in the Army, stopped by to cast his expert eye over the models. Thank you, Mr Baker for sharing your passion and inspiring so many young model makers. 👏✈️

Who needs Glastonbury when you’ve got Highfest? 🎶 Watching our pupils step onto stage and perform in front of a crowd was a reminder of just how much courage live performance takes. We think the applause could probably be heard across our fields! Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen and who came along to cheer on our performers. Until next year, Highfest 💙 #Highfest #IndependentSchool #YoungMusicians #SelfBelief

Who needs Glastonbury when you have HighFest?! ☀️🎶 Festival season came to Highfield & Brookham on Friday, with our pupils taking to the stage to share their music with our school community. It takes enormous courage to stand in front of a crowd and perform, and there is always that moment before the music begins when the nerves could easily take over. That is what made the encouragement from friends, together with the cheers from the audience, so special. It was a lovely reminder of what HighFest is all about! As the sun began to set, the school grounds took on a real festival feel. With ice creams in hand and music filling the air, it was the perfect way to round off the year. Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen and to everyone who came along to support our performers. We’re already looking forward to doing it all again next year. 💙

When life gives you a heatwave… bring out the water balloons! ☀️ Our cricket skills session got a splash of creativity yesterday, with staff adapting activities to keep everyone cool while still developing the children’s technique and ball control. It was great to see our staff modelling the very skills we’re encouraging our pupils to develop, showing that adapting and working together is something we all do 🤝🏽 #IndepedentSchool #Cricket #PE #Heatwave #Collaboration

A huge well done to our Year 4 pupils for their fantastic performance of Gladis Baker, Gladiator! 🎭 There were plenty of laughs as the Great Roman Bake Off came to life, with ambitious bakers, a demanding Emperor and more than a few baking disasters along the way! Despite this week’s warm weather, they took to the stage with enthusiasm and plenty of smiles, delivering a performance they should be incredibly proud of. It was a joy to watch them perform as an ensemble, with every child playing their part in keeping the story moving and making each other shine. A fantastic team effort Year 4! 👏
